Why Start BeTweet?

the story behind the hippo and a resolution


Here we are, at the end of 2013, on the brink of 2014. Again. I swear I have been through this process countless times and every single New Year’s Eve I emerge with a detailed Resolutions list that looks like a business plan more than anything. This year is no different… except, this time there is no list.

The problem with resolutions is, they’re so vague and so big.

I took a brief look at last year’s and it was full of world-round trips and ambitious freelance dreams. None of it came to fruition because I was just planning and not doing. Perhaps I was afraid of failure, or success. Or both.

And they were not specific, manageable goals. They were dreams.

The difference between a goal and a dream is the deadline.

Obviously, I will revise my resolutions-writing skills this year. I will break everything down into months and the goals will have deadlines. I will also vow to do more than I speak and do more than I dream.

And I start today. Today is the day I’ll tell the world about BeTweet.

Truth is, I was trying to keep it a mystery because I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. As far as I’m concerned, this article is startup suicide. But you know what? I’m not starting this to make the big bucks or gain fame. I’m doing it to finally do something and I know I have the skills to do it.

So what is BeTweet? It’s a hack.

No no, it’s not the illegal kind. You know how everything you read is all about “life hacks” these days? How to manage your time, how to relieve stress, how to find the quickest way to success. Truth is, hacks are complete hacks.

They only work because we believe they do. Like the placebo pill.

All the same, they work. And BeTweet’s hacks are of the nice kind, the ones that help people (and businesses) engage and connect and grow, instead of ignore what twitter stands for. Social media is social, not selfish.

So BeTweet’s aim is to help entrepreneurs in the beginning stages of their startups. Whether you’re planning, pre-launching, or have already put everything in motion, you need a solid twitter campaign.

But before it becomes what it’s meant to be, betweet is simply an experiment. It is the first of its kind: a result of the product and a product of the result. Whatever it achieves the first few months, it will later teach.

I am keeping progress sheets, doing web analytics (I hate that), and I am going crazy over design when I have not had a day’s worth of design experience or learning it. Luckily, I used to play with PhotoShop.

Why did I bother creating something so fickle?

Because I am myself and I act without thinking sometimes. I never act without doing research first, however, and I believe there is value in BeTweet. Have you noticed how some startups don’t have twitter presence? Have you noticed how some others achieve tremendous success by crowdfunding and marketing on social media and even coming up with crazy titles?

It’s the time for crazy ventures. It’s the time to experiment, to act.

So I created BeTweet because I love twitter. I believe that it is the best free online marketing tool a marketer can get their hands on. And there are so many features that most people, surprisingly, ignore. Like twitter lists.

And it doesn’t have to be about paying to promote or growth hacking. In fact, these days a startup’s success is more about engagement and content than numbers and graphs. I read somewhere (how sad is it that I can’t find the article among the sea of many others like it) that next year companies will embrace the power of the fanbase. Finally.

Fans love the product and spread the word about it. Followers follow, ignore, and self-promote. Fortunately, there are the superstars who do it “right” in all senses of the word. They follow-back, promote, congratulate, communicate, and help others out. They’re the ones with true fans, the ones who deserve them. And the people who pay for a bulk of random followers don’t get so much business, or satisfaction for that matter.

Now, I don’t know everything there is to know about business, but I’m bright, I’ll figure it out along the way. This may be a mistake, but whatever happens, I would like to try and make BeTweet function by next New Year’s.

BeTweet the world and it’ll BeTweet you back.

Is what I like to say. It’s about connection, not alienation. If you do twitter right, you might find that miracles do happen. I’ll tell you a quick true story. I was offline for most of this year, for reasons unknown. I was just too busy ‘living’. I struggled to find jobs, I was desperate for some extra cash, and I was just not satisfied with my life. There was no purpose, no passion.

Then one day I got back on twitter, in September maybe.

The moment I tweeted my first message, I felt at home. I started looking for interesting people, listing them, talking to them, and reading their words on Medium. I even started writing again! My life was back on track.

Then I found some opportunities and a paying job. One thing led to another, I was planning a new business venture, telling the inner critics to shut up and let me be. Let me be happy, dammit, I deserve it!

BeTweet may be or not, but I will make sure I give it a shot.

And why is there a hippo on the landing page? Long story short, my mother said something about animals at the zoo, I remembered this fabulous hippo and how I caught it in mid-slumber, half submerged, half emerging, and I thought, this is me, or it was. I stuck it on there as a wake-up call.

Hippos are symbols of friendship and relaxation. I guess my thinking was that everyone’s so stressed out, especially the crazy heads like me who come up with new projects every few months. Not to mention the ones (like me again) who work on the holidays. We all need a break. And a bunch of friends. So now it’s time to get off twitter and back into life again.
