The Graffiti Jungle

Graffiti Pier is known as one of the most popular outside art spaces to visit in the Philly area. People all over gather in groups to adventure through this graffiti jungle and here is why.

Graffiti Pier was once known as the Port Richmond Yards coal loading pier, but was shut down and abandoned in 1991. Nature and graffiti artists have since reclaimed the land and transformed the pile of concrete into a magnet for all curious day trippers, local or not. In all sorts of weather, you’ll see couples hand in hand, looking at the bright painted walls, groups of friends armed with cameras and smartphones taking pictures of the art, artists sketching the landscape or adding on to the art that’s already there.

After hearing about Graffiti Pier myself and personally visiting it, the one thing that keeps attracting me to it is that there was no master plan for where it got to where it is now. Technically, everyone who visits Graffiti Pier is trespassing, it is private property but that hasn't stopped anyone. This pier got to where it is now without guidelines and without permission it just happened. One by one more people started showing up and adding a little bit of themselves to the walls around them.
