Carson Wentz is the man of the hour in Philly right now, and some would say of the NFL. As of Sunday December 3, he has lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 10–2 season after a heart wrenching loss to the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 24 to 10. Yet still, the Eagles lead the NFC East division and have a good chance of staying the number one seed. Carson Wentz has been a great asset to the birds in his second season, but as most Philly fans would agree, he kind of came out of nowhere.

Young life of Wentz

Wentz was born December 30, 1992 in Raleigh, North Carolina and moved to North Dakota at the age of three. He was a defensive back as well as a quarterback at his high school, Century High School in Bismarck. As well as football, he also played baseball and basketball. He was also the valedictorian at his high school.

College Career 2012–2015

For college, Wentz attended North Dakota State and decided to redshirt for his first season. That year they won their first FCS title. His next year, as a red shirt freshman he was the backup quarterback behind Brock Jensen. He played in his first collegiate game on September 22, in which he completed eight total passes and threw his first touchdown pass. Wentz finished his first season by completing 12 out of 16 passes for a total of 144 yards.

His 2013 season, Wentz was yet again the second string quarterback, and only played in 11 games. He ended that season completing 22 out of 30 passes for 209 total yards.

Finally, in his 2014 season Wentz was moved up to starting quarterback. His first start was against Iowa State. He completed 18 out of 28 pass attempts and threw for over 200 yards.

His 2015 season as a fifth year senior Wentz passed for a career high 335 yards. Wentz broke his wrist in a game against South Dakota but somehow managed to complete the game. Wentz graduated with a degree in health and physical education with a 4.0 gpa.

Personal Life

Carson Wentz is an avid hunter during the off season and often hunts in North Dakota when he has the chance. Wentz considers himself a Christian when it comes to religion. Carson Wentz is currently in a relationship with Melissa Uhrich. They were high school sweethearts. They attended different colleges, Wentz to North Dakota State as we all know, and Uhrich attended Concordia College, where she was a cross country athlete

Professional Career

In 2016 the Philadelphia Eagles selected Wentz in the first round with the 2nd overall pick of the NFL draft. Wentz was supposed to sit and learn for his first season but the previous Eagle’s quarterback was traded to the Minnesota Vikings. He signed a four year deal that is worth over $26 million, along with a $17 million dollar bonus. A pretty good deal if you ask me. He made his first pro start on September 11 against the Cleveland Browns. In that game he threw for 278 yards for two touchdowns. In 2016 Wentz lead the Eagles to a 7–9 record, which is nothing compared to 2017’s domination.

2017 Season So Far

His first game against the Redskins, Wentz threw over 300 passing yards in the game. He threw for two touchdowns and an interception. In his second game Wentz threw for a whopping 333 total yards including two touchdowns and one interception. In total, he passed for 1,362 yards and ten touchdowns. GO BIRDS.

Awards to date

Wentz won 3 NFL Pepsi Rookie of the Week Awards in weeks 1, 3 and 5. Je was two time NFC Offensive Player of the week in week 3, 2016 and week 7, 2017. He was also NFC player of the month in October 2017, and NFC rookie of the month in September 2016.

Carson’s future

As of right now according to a MVP poll, Carson Wentz is ranked second under Tom Brady with 45 votes to Brady’s 55. The Patriot’s and the Eagle’s record is tied as of right now. According to ESPN Wentz’s season passing is as follows, “Regular-season passing: 242-for-399 (60.7 percent); 3,005 yards; 29 TDs; 6 INT; 73.6 Total QBR.” And the case for him is as follows:

The Eagles are also 10–2, and Wentz has more touchdown passes (by three) and a bit higher QBR than Brady. Even in defeat on Sunday night, Wentz managed to show flashes of what has made him so incredible. He’s completing 66.4 percent of his passes on third down for a league-best average of 9.48 yards per attempt, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. Dominating on third down and keeping drives alive is a way to rip out opponents’ hearts. Wentz can do it with his arms or his legs, and knows when to do which.

The Case Against Wentz: A lot of Wentz’s top-line numbers just aren’t elite. He’s 26th in completion percentage, 10th in passing yards and 10th in yards per attempt. This is obviously nitpicking, but we’re talking about the top end of a very crowded MVP field. When this many guys are playing this well, the only way to sort them out is to nitpick. Wentz received two of the four first-place votes Brady didn’t get this week, plus five second-place votes and five thirds.

If Wentz keeps up his long yard passing he really might have a chance to beat out the GOAT, Tom Brady for MVP this upcoming season.

The following are Carson Wentz’s stats for this past season:

Final games of the 2017 Eagle’s Schedule:

Eagles vs. Rams Sunday 12/10/17 4:25 PM

Eagles vs. Giants Sunday 12/17/17 1:00 PM

Raiders vs. Eagles Sunday 12/25/17 8:30 PM

Cowboys vs. Eagles 12/31/17 1:00 PM

Go birds!

Wentz, was hurt on a third-quarter touchdown run that was called back because of a holding penalty in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams. He remained in the game for the remainder of the drive and hit Alshon Jeffery on a touchdown pass before sitting out the fourth quarter. Wentz is out for the remainder of the 2017 season.
