7 Time Management Tips You Can Use to Avoid Burnout
Set boundaries to protect your time.
The people you work for are waiting for you at home.
It took me years to understand this aspect of life until I heard the story of David, an amazing director I worked for at IHOP.
David had spent years climbing the corporate ladder, his days filled with endless meetings and late-night visits to different restaurants around the country. He used to brag that he had more dinners at airport restaurants than with his kids. On the surface, he seemed happy; he earned promotion after promotion and became the company’s rising star and the model any aspiring employee should follow.
However, if you spent time with him and allowed him to be vulnerable, you would see a different side of him. His health was deteriorating, and his relationship with his family was crumbling. One Friday afternoon, a day before Christmas, he had enough.
David walked into his vice president's office, a place he worked so hard to occupy, and said, “I can’t keep going at this pace.”
His vice president was shocked. “But you were happy,” she said with a hint of disappointment. I was happy to please you,” David said, his voice shaky, “but not myself.”
