I learned to touch type for my computer-based ACCA exams. The resource I used for this purpose is called Typing.com. It was suggested by the ACCA and taught me all I needed to know. I recommend it to anyone learning to touch type.

Course Structure

The typing course is divided into 3 levels:

  • Beginner — teaches how to type individual letters and punctuation marks on the keyboard
  • Intermediate — moves on to typing words and sentences
  • Advanced — moves to further complex typing (long words and tough punctuation), teaching to type numbers and using the numeric keypad

There are wrap-up units at the end of each level followed by an assessment.

Course Lessons

Each level has several lessons with the number of lessons decreasing with each further level. Each lesson shows your:

  • Average speed
  • Average accuracy
  • Time spent

You can also look at your average speed and accuracy for all lessons combined at the top of the home screen.

These lessons include engaging videos that not only focus on typing technique but also related topics like typing posture.

Further Typing Practice

The home screen has a section called ‘Typing Practice’ that has stories, facts, jokes etc for additional practice. This section also displays your top problem keys along with graphs and percentages to help you better analyse your typing errors.

The Best Feature

Although I appreciate the bite-sized videos and problem keys analysis, the best feature of the course in my opinion is the big keyboard that appears on the screen as you type. It displays the fingers that should be used to type the words/sentences/punctuation being typed. It’s super helpful, especially in the early days when you can get stuck frequently.

Conclusion

The course includes comprehensive typing lessons, engaging videos addressing not only typing but related topics like posture, and further practice areas including an analysis of your problem keys.

You also get to know your average speed, average accuracy and time spent (including both cumulative and per-lesson basis).
