When General Motors CEO Mary Barra was an HR executive, she was so annoyed by the company's ten-page dress code policy that she decided to throw it in the trash and replace it with two words: Dress appropriately.

The company executives became upset and raised several concerns. They asked, "What if we have guests that day? What if someone misinterprets the simplified dress code? What if someone defies authority by wearing shorts every day?" She responded, "Ask them to dress appropriately."

If they don't know what dress appropriately means, the issue is not the dress code but the company's hiring practices.
