From Munich to Manhattan: The launch of Allianz X North America
Allianz X North America officially opened its doors just over a month ago. We asked the team members about this big step and the strategy behind it.
What motivated Allianz X to open an office in New York City?
Alex: Our North American operations already manage nearly one billion dollars across ten portfolio companies, including recent additions like NEXT Insurance. Our New York office is a strategic move to strengthen our engagement with these companies, as well as fostering growth and partnerships. Furthermore, we are now in an even better position to find and invest in exciting new targets — we’ve hit the ground running in this regard!
Can you share details about the official launch of Allianz X North America?
Philip: We officially launched on November 1st, marking a pivotal moment in our multi-year strategy to establish a physical presence in North America. It’s a significant achievement for both Allianz X and the Allianz Group, and we look forward to expanding our business in North America.
Where is the Allianz X office located?
Maya: You will find us in the Paramount Plaza, a notable New York landmark, near Times Square. The office is an iconic landmark. If you get lost, look for the building with the big ‘Allianz’ sign at the top. The view from the office is spectacular and serves as a welcoming hub for our portfolio companies, co-investors, and other partners.
Who is on the team, and what are their roles?
Gregor: Our core team includes five members from the Munich office. Alexander De Kegel, as our Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director, heads the team. Philip Wieland works closely with him as a Senior Manager and Managing Director, Maya Rollinger and Niklas Mundorf as Managers, and myself as an Associate. We are deeply engaged with our portfolio companies and are seeking new opportunities as a cohesive unit. What else are Allianz X’s expectations for the New York office?
Niklas: We aim to significantly impact the US insurance and asset management industry based on our position as one of the largest insurtech investors, which we earned by co-leading or participating in the biggest rounds this year and last year. Further, we are exploring opportunities in wealth and asset management, aiming to become a key player in these segments as well. New York is the perfect city for our ambitions!
Does Allianz X plan to open offices in other locations?
Alex: Our focus remains on our Munich headquarters and New York offices. With a compact team of around 40 people, we prioritize maintaining our unique team spirit and concentrated portfolio. It is about executing and achieving what we set out to do before moving on. We will consider further expansion based on our achievements in the coming years.
What are you most excited about in New York, and what will you miss about Munich?
Niklas: New York opens many doors, both professionally and personally. I continuously strive to expand my horizons, have new experiences, and make new connections. New York is the perfect place to continue this journey, combining living and working in a new environment. While I look forward to this new chapter, I will miss Munich’s quaint charms, such as the variety of bread, its beautiful countryside, and the small, cozy towns surrounding it.
Why did you choose to be in the North American team?
Maya: Joining the North American office and driving our vision here aligns perfectly both with Allianz X’s strategy and my career goals. I’ve grown with Allianz X since my internship, and I’m eager to contribute to our expansion in North America, embracing new challenges and the vibrant energy of New York City.
