COP28 concluded on 13 December, 2023 in Dubai after nearly two weeks of negotiations, talks and actions to address the growing climate crisis. One year on from announcing the launch of the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP) at COP27, the team at Allinfra was once again present at the pinnacle global conference. This time to take part in a series of panel discussions and look back at the progress made in 2023.

One Year of ECP

In 2022, at COP27, Allinfra and Consensys convened the Ethereum Climate Platform — a group of technology companies aligned around the mission to accelerate climate finance at scale. The platform is also committed to abating far more carbon than historical Ethereum ecosystem emissions.

Since then we have welcomed new partners Toucan, NEAR Foundation, Solid World and OKX to the initiative, strengthening our mission to continue financing high-quality carbon mitigation projects across the world.

A Glance at the Latest COP

Led by Allinfra’s very own Bill Kentrup and Climate Collective’s Anna Lerner, ECP took part in two official events at this year’s conference as part of UNFCCC Innovation Hub. The first looked at how digital technologies can be leveraged to unlock climate finance and help countries with their Nationally Determined Contributions. The second panel showcases the ECP platform and the significant progress made in the past year.

Bill discussed the recent study from the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Alternative Finance which provided quantifiable data on Ethereum’s emission history. The study underlined Ethereum’s transition from the proof-of-work era to the proof-of-stake mechanism, painting blockchain’s potential for positive impact when used responsibly.

The findings are a stark reminder of the capital needed to finance decarbonisation efforts such as this and, on a more positive note, allows us to comprehend the magnitude of positive impact achieved through the near-complete decarbonisation of the Ethereum ecosystem.
