Boston! Titletown! City of Champions! It seems like every week there is some sort of athletic feat for the people of this city to celebrate, and this week is certainly not an exception!

Something really special happened this weekend concerning the Boston Pride, beloved National Women’s Hockey League franchise. With a solid 5–2 win over the Connecticut Whale this Saturday, they have guaranteed themselves the 1 seed in the playoffs this March, putting them on a great path to securing their second consecutive Isobel Cup. It’s the type of true dynasty the Boston deserves and it’s got the citizens of the city hyped up with local sports hysteria!

We spoke to some fans after the game, Paul from West Roxbury had this to say:

“There’s not usually anything to get excited about in Boston during late January and early February. It’s very cold. The Sox haven’t started playing yet. The Pride are great because they give us something to be invested in during these dead months, and they deliver with winning results.”

But it didn’t look so sure for Boston this whole game! Heading into the third period, fans around the area were anxious with the Pride were down 2–1. This is certainly not a situation they are used to being in this year. It was going to take a concerted effort to get back in that game but the Pride are known to do their jobs, perhaps better than any other team in the area. In that final part of the game, they put up an unbelievable four unanswered scores to win the game, the type of improbable turn of momentum that is not soon forgotten.

This win eased the anxiety of fans across Boston and allowed them to have a pleasant and quiet Sunday without having to worry if anyone found a flaw in their team’s nearly perfect playing style.

As for the Pride players? Well, many of them have the All Star Game on their minds. The All Star Game, which will take place this upcoming weekend in Pittsburgh will feature the best 28 players in the NWHL, nine of which will be fielded from the Boston Pride, including goalie Brittany Ott and U.S. Women’s Olympic Team captain Meghan Duggan, who scored twice in that 3rd period trouncing. After the game, Tony from Everett was gushing over her performance.

“That Meghan Duggan, I tell you. What a player. She has some true leadership qualities. What a clutch performance. Among the best I’ve ever seen. When it comes to women’s hockey, I think Meghan Duggan can go down as an all time great. She could be the Peyton Manning or Joe Montana of women’s hockey.”

The next Boston Pride game will be at home against the Buffalo Beauts on February 18. They play their home games at the Warrior Ice Arena located just around the corner from our offices in Allston. It’s a treasure to be able to see a real Boston team play in a real Boston neighborhood instead of a bullshit fake place like, say, Foxboro. And with $20 general admission, it’s no wonder the games are sold out hours before puck drop! If you don’t buy a ticket in time, you can always watch the games for free on the NWHL Youtube Channel. You might even be surprised at how much sports you can watch without being bombarded with commercials!

Will anything be able to stop the Pride? It’s hard to say. The Pride currently have an astounding +35 goal differential, while no rival team is even on the positive side. One area of clear advantage to the Pride is that unlike most Boston teams, the plurality of their roster is actually from Massachusetts, giving them a home field advantage unlike many others.

It’s been an incredible run that some can’t even imagine being ended, like super fan Matty from Cambridge:

Look, we’re 12–0 right now, if we win out we will be 17–0. What kind of losing team would be if we went undefeated in the regular season and then lost in the playoffs? That would be embarrassing. I see no reason why we can’t end this season 19–0. Just don’t trademark ‘19–0’ before it happens or anything stupid like that, and we’re in the clear for sure.

We at Allston Spillage, certainly hope this is the case, because we love this team and want to see them take this all the way. Whether it’s the puck handling prowess of Hilary Knight or the world class defensive play of Blake Bolden, there is something for everyone at a Boston Pride game. It gives all the fans a feeling of unity, rooting for a dominant, overwhelmingly positive force like the Pride. It’s a feeling that fans like Scotty from Malden doesn’t see going away.

“This team is so lovable. There’s no conflict about it, this a team for all of Boston. Sure, maybe if the star power and management unambiguously supported a fascist regime and then later on weaseled their out of defending those actions, maybe then we would feel queasy about liking them. But that seems like it would be an incredibly stupid thing for them to do.”

Truly, there is no pride in Boston quite like Boston Pride pride.
