Centralized messaging applications like Facebook Messenger, WeChat, and Telegram are seemingly always under fire for questionable data privacy practices.

These apps raise the following concerns: How safe is my data? Is end-to-end encryption actually being enforced? Is there a third party or government accessing my information?

WeChat’s security has been questioned for its lack of privacy and its potential to contain spyware. In October of 2016, the rating of WeChat’s security system was rated a 0/100 by Amnesty International.

Facebook has been increasingly scrutinized in recent years due to its numerous privacy debacles. From the infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal, to its security breach in 2018 where 50 million users information was exposed due to undetected malware. Naturally, Facebook Messenger would not be the most trusted app for secure communication. Numerous security experts have recommended that users do not send sensitive information over Facebook Messenger. The New York Times reported that Facebook’s partnerships with large companies like Spotify, Netflix, and Yahoo, means that these companies also have access to extensive user data.

Telegram, another free messaging app, has also been the subject of speculation. Group conversations can hold up to 200,000 members, however, they are not encrypted end-to-end by default. Users have to manually select a “Secret Chat” option for P2P messaging. Without knowing of this feature, all conversation data would be easily accessible.

Are there any safe alternatives out there?
