Snapchat is now one of the most popular social media platforms out there.
Behind all of its colorful filters, its disappearing messages, and pseudo “Private chats”, how private is the app?
Snapchat was created in 2011 as photo “Photo sharing app” and was originally called Pictaboo. Later that year, the founders changed the name to Snapchat. In 2013 they introduced Snapchat Stories. Users could upload photos that would last 24 hours trying to recreate Facebook’s timeline.
The first of Snapchats security concerns began when 4.6 million accounts were compromised in 2014. Phone numbers and Usernames were downloaded by an external website.
The next of Snapchats privacy issues came from what companies fear most, human error.
Yes, people make mistakes but after an employee received an email from who they thought was the Snapchat chief executive Evan Spiegel, they made a terrible error. They released payroll information of both current and former employees.
This type of breach brings up concerns because even if you have the most advanced security system in the world, human error still exists.
Finally, it was reported in 2019 that Snapchat employees were using a tool called SnapLion that gave them access to users location, phone numbers, email address and saved Snaps. It was reported at some employees were using the tool to spy on users.
Even with its disappearing messages, privacy has been an issue with most major tech companies, but it always feels personal when the privacy breach occurs on a social media platform.
