Steemit.com describes itself on its website as “one of the many websites (including Busy.org, DTube, and SteemPeak.com) that are powered by the STEEM.IT blockchain and STEEM.IT cryptocurrency. All of these websites read and write content to the STEEM.IT blockchain, which stores the content in an immutable blockchain ledger, and rewards users for their contributions with digital tokens called STEEM.IT.”
Their main difference between STEEM.IT and other social media platforms is that they believe that users should benefit from rewards from the contributions they make to the platform.
But with their seemingly positive mission statement are they a responsible platform for both their users and their employees?
In June of 2016, a hacker stole $85 000 dollars worth of STEEM.IT currency was stolen. Though no users accounts were affected in the hack, complaints of lack of security and two-factor authentication were frustrating users.
Along with that data breach, two years later STEEM.IT faced another onslaught of bad press. In 2018, The company announced it would be laying off 70% of its workforce citing the weakness of the cryptocurrency market as the reason. The remaining member of the team would focus on reducing server costs but shrinking the size of the STEEM.IT Blockchain and the dependence on Amazons AWS for instances.
Though all of this bad press has damaged the image of STEEM.IT, what seems to have saved this particular company is embracing decentralization.
