Updated Almond Skill for Alexa Lets You Block Kids’ WiFi

New Almond Smart Home Skill works with more smart devices

Last May we became the first router to integrate with Amazon Alexa. Today we are proud to announce more features, including Wi-Fi management via our custom Almond skill and a whole new Almond Smart Home skill.

Use voice to control devices connected to Almond

Amazon Alexa Smart Home allows you to control lights, switches, dimmers, and thermostats by voice, but only for products certified by Amazon. Not every product is certified, meaning you can’t ask Alexa to control them. Unless you spend more money to replace these unsupported products, you’re stuck having to use an app instead of your voice. This gets old really fast.

The “Almond for Smart Home skill” solves this problem. As long as one of these products — lights, dimmers, and thermostats — are connected to Almond, you can control them with your voice through Alexa. Once the skill is enabled, Alexa discovers compatible smart devices connected to Almond and lets you use voice to control them. It’s as simple as that. Here are some examples:

• If you have switches or non-dimmable lights, you can turn them on or off by saying: “Alexa, turn on my Bedroom lights”.
• If you have dimmable lights, you can change the brightness with the command: “Alexa, brighten Downstairs lights to 60 percent”, or “Alexa, dim the Living Room lights”.
• If you have thermostats, you can change the temperature by saying: “Alexa, lower the Bedroom temperature by 3 degrees”, or “Alexa, set the Downstairs temperature to 72”.

More powerful scenes with the Almond for Smart Home Skill

When we launched our Alexa integration last May, we made it possible to control Scenes using voice. With the updated Almond for Smart Home Skill you can add any light, switch, dimmer, or thermostat to a scene, and control your entire smart home.

Use voice for even easier Wi-Fi management

Our custom Almond skill for Alexa has been updated to support parental controls and the guest network, in addition to the existing voice control for scenes and Home and Away Modes.

Parental Controls

Almond features parental controls which you can enable using voice through Alexa. You can block internet access for the devices you marked as Kids’ devices by saying “Alexa, tell Almond to disable the kids’ Internet.”

Guest Networks

You can control the guest network by saying “Alexa, tell Almond to enable the guest network.” When you enable the guest network you can automatically have the guest Wi-Fi username and password sent to you via email, which you can then share with your guests as you please.
