Motörleaf: Changing the world one indoor garden at a time
Recently, I had an incredible conversation with Ally Monk, the CEO and Co-founder of Motörleaf, a company empowering farmers with the technology to monitor and care for their indoor farms. He took the time out of his busy day to talk to me about the amazing work they are doing at Motörleaf.
I was completely astounded to hear how passionate he was about his company and team. It shouldn’t have surprised me, I work with plenty of entrepreneurs in my day-to-day. But, speaking with him was different. He absolutely, without a doubt, was enthusiastic about his team, the product they are building and how they are truly going to change the world.
I first reached out to Ally because I was impressed with all they’ve done in just one year. Such as:
- Went from prototype to factors production;
- Graduated from FounderFuel
- Won the IBM Smart Camp Montreal Prize
- Raised a $1.1M seed round led by 500 Startups Canada
- Mentioned by Betakit as one of the 10 Montreal Tech Startups to Watch in 2017.
Well I was watching them! And I thought to myself, there must be a great team of people working together to get this far. I explored them on social media, my instincts were right. They’re amazing. I had to learn more.
So, when speaking with Ally, I discovered the key ingredient to making their team work in such a cohesive, successful way. Ready for it?…
…Purpose
Sounds simple, right? It is. The founders value helping everyone on their team be their best. Every team member operates with ownership of their domains and they own their responsibilities and deliverables. This sense of purpose and responsibility helps every employee learn new things and keeps them from watching the clock.
The team initiative to succeed is certainly there. In addition to being super motivated, everyone on the team has fun. Ally shared with me that they have strong family values with both him and his co-founder Ramen having large families to care for. They are also a company that respects honesty and flexibility. For Motörleaf, it’s about having fun at work and making a difference.
The team at Motörleaf is making a difference. Their primary driver is to “dramatically change the world, by lowering the barrier of entry so millions of people all over the world can embrace growing crops for themselves and each other.”
