McDonald’s Prepares To Launch A Metaverse Campaign- Who Will Follow?

McDonald’s Files A Patent For Virtual Goods

McDonald’s could be getting ready to launch a major Metaverse campaign. McDonald’s recent trademark applications suggest that it is intent on entering the NFT and virtual world markets. The applications for the trademarks were filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Feb. 4, as noted in a Wednesday tweet by trademark attorney Josh Gerben.

McDonald’s has filed trademarks for its own virtual food and beverages, as well as “downloadable multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio, video, and non-fungible tokens.” It has also applied for its intellectual property covering “entertainment services,” including real-world and virtual concerts. The filing relates to “operating a virtual restaurant featuring actual and virtual goods, operating a virtual restaurant online with home delivery.”

Despite the trademark applications demonstrating the restaurant chain’s interest in the Metaverse, the company has been involved with bitcoin and cryptocurrency for several months now. An NFT exhibit celebrating Lunar New Year was planned last week, and an exhibit commemorating the McRib Burger’s 40th anniversary was unveiled in October.

Also, the restaurant’s social media team has been engaging in crypto discussions more and more on Twitter in recent weeks. “How are you doing people who run crypto twitter accounts?” the company tweeted on Jan. 24, after the market plunged.

McDonald’s isn’t the first major company to express interest in the Metaverse. The Metaverse has also caught the attention of multinational firms including Adidas, Nike, Coca-Cola, and Visa. Adidas, for example, adopted its own NFT, Bored Ape Yacht Club, as part of a marketing effort called “Into the Metaverse.” But Facebook, now known as Meta, has made the biggest move yet. As Facebook announced its rebrand in October 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced the firm would pivot to “bring the Metaverse to life.” As NFTs and the Metaverse continue to attract attention, more companies will likely follow Zuckerberg and Ronald McDonald’s lead.
