I’ve held off on writing about AI because I wanted to wait for the hype to die down and see what stuck and what didn’t. It does look like AI is here to stay though. And it will significantly change the way many of us think about and make things.

It reminds me of when search engines were first for a lack of a better word invented. That massively increased the utility of the Internet and changed the web from being just a novel place to burn an hour or two to a place where real work could be done. Now all of a sudden I could actually find what I was looking for by typing it into a search bar (as opposed to previously where I was more or less stumbling blindly). This kicked off a network effect where more users attracted more web content, which attracted even more users and even more web content.

And the third side of the network Google (and to a much lesser extant Microsoft and Yahoo) used all these interactions and data to keep making search better in terms of knowing what you were looking for and identifying where the best sources of information tended to be. So search is kind of like having an all-knowing librarian as a friend — ask him a question and he will hand you back the relevant articles, papers, and books that answer your question. But most…
