We Need To Protect Our Democracy Now!
If we wait we might be left with nothing left to protect
I was extremely disappointed when Trump won the presidency last year. Since then I’ve been reading up on how and why once-stable democracies backslide into increasingly corrupt and autocratic regimes.
Because I think that we Americans can no longer afford to be complacent. We are at real risk of losing our democratic freedoms in the near future.
Some of you might be reading this and thinking what’s the big deal? So what if America becomes less democratic?
It’s a huge deal and here’s why.
Folks in the West (America, Canada, Europe, etc.) take freedom for granted. We’ve generally been at peace and have enjoyed stable government for so long that we just assume that’s the way it always will be. Let’s list out some of the freedoms that we take for granted:
- The freedom to elect our leaders. And for those leaders to respect our wishes win or lose.
- The freedom to vote on what laws we are or aren’t governed by.
- The freedom to voice our approval or disapproval on how we’re being governed. And when needed to assemble to make our disapproval known.
