Alpha Blockchain (ABC) is pleased to announce a partnership with Zion, a blockchain project aiming for poverty reduction in disadvantaged areas by developing low-power, distributed embedded computing hardware as widely as practical.

While one of the key features of blockchain is decentralized and trust-free systems, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen a lot of centralization occur due to the expensive hardware used to process transactions on their networks. In the case of Bitcoin, over 50% of mining is performed by the top three mining pools, and the hardware is geographically centered in areas with low electricity costs.

Zion attempts to promote decentralization by reducing the cost of processing transactions (mining) by using an energy efficient consensus algorithm, and specialized hardware that costs significantly less than a smartphone. Overall this reduces the cost barrier of participating in blockchain by over 95%.

Zion’s sister project, Noiz, is a decentralized ad network that aims to give control of advertising back to the community. It also advocates using blockchain technology to eliminate advertising fraud and drive engagement. An important element of Noiz its support for social impact organizations.

ABC’s role in this partnership is developing and testing the embedded computing hardware on a test blockchain as a proof of concept. We’re working hard to develop a unique, low-cost platform to spread blockchain technologies as widely as possible!
