We are excited to announce the launch of our new Web3 venture studio! Alpha Labs has been in the works for the past couple of months and it’s now time to share our thinking more broadly.

What is Alpha Labs?

Alpha Labs is a product-focused Web3 venture studio created to perpetuate the Web3 space and adoption within it. We are designers and technologists. Our fundamental belief is that Web3 presents tremendous market opportunity that oftentimes gets shrouded in complexities. We intend to apply our expertise towards building human-centric, joyful experiences that enable everyone to participate in this disruptive industry. We take a broad view of the Web3 space, and specialize in key areas.

What is Web3 venture studio?

A venture studio is our approach to rapidly incubating and executing ideas that leverage our in-house expertise in tandem with collaboration from external parties. We’re starting fresh; deploying our own capital — with the intention that over time we’ll be able to generate additional capital and in turn, momentum that enables us to expand into other avenues.

Mission statement

Our mission is to expand the user base and lower the barrier of entry into the Web3 space by creating innovative, disruptive, and experimental tools that highlight use-cases around blockchain and the decentralized web.

Less is more. Our fundamental focus is shipping things that people can interact with. If there’s a demand to add more features, then we will meet the demand — however, we will hold back from scaling projects pre-maturely unless there is a clear demand signal from the market

Why start this now?

We believe that the potential of Web3 technologies to create more open, transparent, and secure systems is limitless. While the excitement around Web3 isn’t the same as it was a year ago, there’s no time like a bear market to build breakthroughs and innovative applications. The focus has shifted away from questionable money-making projects to high-quality innovations. Furthermore, with Evan stepping into an advisory role with Cool Cats, he has the freedom to pursue other ventures — and with Uneeb having left Coinbase earlier this year, the opportunity is now in front of us to kickoff Alpha Labs!

Who are we?

We are experienced builders and innovators who deeply understand the Web3 space and the opportunities it presents. We have a strong track record of success in the industry and are eager to build innovative and disruptive products.

We (Evan and Uneeb) met unexpectedly back in 2017 in Seattle, at an entrepreneurial tech event where we were both enticed by free pizza, and have been friends ever since. We previously collaborated on ideation of projects here and there but due to our full time roles and personal obligations, we never had the opportunity to forge any of our ideas. Until now.

Evan left, Uneeb Right

Evan: Born and raised in Atlanta, I spent my junior design years at Adult Swim. After graduating the college design program (where I met clon!), I spread my wings to Seattle to join the design team at Valve. After my time there I joined the product design team at Microsoft, and then Bitcoin.com, where I was responsible for their rebrand. Following that, my role was senior brand designer at Megaport which was the last gig before co-founding Cool Cats with my other kick butt counterparts.

I have a knack for product design, branding, and market opportunity identification. I’m in love with the process of ideating and incubating an idea to life, especially with the right collaborative partners. Uneeb and I aim to launch experimental, innovative, and eyebrow-raising apps and tools geared at Web3.

Uneeb: I’ve been all over the map. I was born in Manchester but spent majority of my adolescence years in Pakistan, before moving to Germany for undergraduate studies. From there, I moved to Copenhagen to work for Microsoft as a Software Engineer; eventually immigrating to U.S to get closer to family. These days I go back and forth between San Francisco and Atlanta. Career-wise, my last job was at Coinbase where I contributed to several fiat integrations (PayPal, Apple Pay, instant withdrawals). Probably, the highlight of my time was pitching Pay SDK to the executive team at Coinbase. And taking it from zero-to-one. Julia Lipton did a fantastic job summarizing my skillset in her blog. Check it out!

I love thinking through hard technical problems. In college, I was obsessed with Gödel, Escher, Bach and specialized in computational logic. In the last couple of years, I have been pondering all sorts of use-cases that can be unlocked using the blockchain.
