This past weekend on Saturday, Nov. 2nd at NYU Stern School of Business, MBA students analyzed stock prices and other indicators of company health, and used that information to recommend strategies going forward.

Kelvin and Henry give the case prompt for the students

The day started off with 2nd year MBA students Henry Marsh and Kelvinder Virdi providing participants with tutorials on how to use Alteryx and Tableau.

Participants were then given the following prompt: “How can your company’s leadership use strategic insights from both past events and financial data to make more informed decisions?” After that it was off to the races!

Using a combination of data from Alpha Vantage, analytics from Tableau, and visualization in Alteryx, the students poured over the data in search of patterns they could use to hypothetically give solid recommendations to the companies.

Students took a number of approaches at the open-ended prompt, and we saw recommendations ranging from casino company WYNN opening more into the US markets, to micro-chip developer AMD honing in on the gaming market.

In the end it was 5-person team calling themselves “Team 8” who ended up bringing home the victory with their recommendation for Netflix to expand more aggressively to global markets.

I was able to speak with Team 8 about their experience with the competition. Here are some of the highlights:

Andrii Malai, Kreagan Kennedy, Harvey Han, Najma Yakob, and Sonja Ritchey— members of Team 8

“There is just so much data that we really tried to think big and go high level… rather than trying to overextend ourselves and being unable to tell a good story.” — Najma Yakob

“I’ve worked with some stock data before. I’ve worked with Bloomberg and CapIQ in the past, and I will say that it was nice to use some tools [such as Alpha Vantage]… that are less time consuming and intimidating.” — Kreagan Kennedy

And, a bit humorously, after talking about how they prioritized their work:

“Unplanned party is ‘the fun’, but unplanned presentation is ‘the disaster’…” — Andrii Malai

Congratulations again to Team 8 and a shout out to everyone who took part in the Case Competition co-hosted by NYU Stern and Alpha Vantage!
