“Resistance to tyrants is a duty before God”. Thus Thomas Jefferson. And in the history of tyrants, there have been many forms of resistance: assassination, armed rebellion, sabotage, seditious writing, and criticism from safe exile. Another form, much beloved by Czechs, is clandestine humour. In Jaroslav Hašek’s novel, “The Good Soldier Švejk”, the eponymous hero poked hilarious fun at the authoritarianism of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its minions…
