Institutionalized religion has much to answer for in the history of human kind. It has given rise, repeatedly, to bloody wars based on differences of belief. The Crusades are a notorious example of one faith taking up arms against another. And within one faith, the religious wars of Europe, in the late Middle Ages, illustrate the power of creedal schism to foment hatred and inflict carnage.
