What is the Smart Layer Pass?

The Smart Layer Pass is a new type of membership pass showcasing what is possible via this new wave of tokenized experiences powered by Smart Layer. Each Smart Layer Pass is created using Smart Layer’s technology, so not only are members getting a pass, they are becoming some of the first users of the Smart Layer Network, helping to scale and grow the network.

The Smart Pass is more than just a basic membership pass. It is the key to an Open Loyalty network. Open Loyalty is a new concept enabling networks of value, solving many of the issues facing traditional loyalty programs, such as scale and value creation. With Open Loyalty, companies can easily expand the value of their programs beyond their walls and easily enable their partners to treat their best customers like theirs. 1

To power the Open Loyalty program, Smart Pass enables holders to earn points by completing quests. Each quest either helps pass holders learn about the power of Smart Layer or supports the building and growth of the Smart Layer Network. The points earned acknowledge and reward the contributions of the community to the Smart Layer Network project. It’s important to note that these Points are units of measure and not directly connected to the SLN token.

Over the coming weeks and months pass holders points will entitle them to surprise and delight experiences and rewards showcasing the power of the open loyalty solution, which Smart Layer has pioneered with the Ethereum Foundation, and rewards partners like Amazon, Microsoft, and Layer Zero.

A New Digital Primitive

Technologically, the Smart Layer Pass is a Smart Token, an off-chain attestation token (off-chain NFT) that is compatible with Ethereum Attestation Service (EAS) and TokenScript. Its utilities will be powered by the Smart Layer Network.

Smart Tokens go beyond being just a currency or collectible to become an application itself. This creates a new digital primitive where tokens become “applications” able to be composed with other services. This enables Smart Tokens to deliver business services when and where the consumer needs them, unlocking a new wave of digital experience which pass holders will experience firsthand.

Beyond it having more functionality than an on-chain NFT, it is frictionless. Compared with on-chain NFT based passes, the Smart Pass uses Attestation. A more flexible, private, and less expensive option than on-chain tokens. The ability for attestations to be held by Web2 methods enables any users to claim their pass with an email address, and put it directly into their Apple or Google Wallet. This technology enables a frictionless experience, while still providing all of the benefits of Web3 and will help tokenization go mainstream by solving one of the biggest issues facing Web3 adoption, friction.

The Smart Pass is unlike any other membership token before it, and will set a new standard for ease of use, and functionality for tokenized loyalty programs.

How Does the Smart Layer Pass Work?

The operation of the Smart Layer Pass involves a series of steps that ensure privacy, security, and a seamless user experience:

1. Frictionless Claiming: SLN users can claim a Smart Layer Pass using their email ID. This email ID serves as the identifier in the attestation token, ensuring a unique identity for each user. To protect user privacy, the email ID is hidden using a Pedersen commitment.
2. Frictionless Use: The attestation is encoded into a URL format and dispatched to the user’s email inbox. Upon clicking the URL, the user is directed to a landing page. Simultaneously, the attestation token is injected into the user’s browser. This seamless process ensures a smooth and intuitive user experience, making the interaction with the Smart Layer Pass as straightforward as possible.
3. Permissionless Use: Users can use their Smart Layer Pass permissionlessly on any third-party platform. As users can self-prove their ownership of the pass, they can interact with various platforms without restrictions.
4. Third-Party Verification: With the user’s permission, third parties can read and verify all or part of the information related to the pass. Users can authenticate themselves to third parties by proving the ownership of the email ID either with a crypto wallet(claiming an email ID attestation to use with crypto wallets like AlphaWallet) or simply via email OTP, etc.
5. Private: Smart Pass is not an on-chain token ensuring the privacy of the data.
6. Apple/Google Wallet integration: For added convenience, users can integrate the Smart Layer Pass with their Apple or Google Wallet. This feature offers an easy and accessible way to view or display the pass. However, it’s important to note that the actual pass, the one that can be used to self-prove membership, is the attestation. This ensures that while the pass is easily accessible, the integrity and security of the Smart Layer Pass are maintained.
7. Smart Token: Smart Layer Pass has it own token interface enabled by TokenScript, which provides the full token knowledge and logic. Third parties can integrate Smart Layer Pass functions into their websites using Smart Layer. This allows for a wide range of functionalities and interactions, enhancing the user experience.
8. Frictionless Integration: Smart Layer facilitates frictionless integration with the simple addition of a line of code to any web experience, making it easy for users and third parties to manage and interact with the Smart Layer Pass.
