Imperatriz Leopoldinense, the famous Brazilian samba school, chose money as the theme of its performance at the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in 2019, which will be held from 2 to 9 March. Dancers will tell the story of money, from the first metal coins and paper notes to cryptocurrencies.
Representatives of the samba school believe that the topic of Bitcoin will impress the audience of the carnival and help the school win the competition this year. According to the information on the Brazilian website Portal do Bitcoin, the school’s performance this year will be called “Give Me Some Money”. It will be devoted to the relationship between money and humanity, from the invention of the first currencies in ancient times to modernity, when they exist in digital form.
“Our story is about money and its relationship with humans from their invention to the present time. It is, without a doubt, one of the most important instruments in the economic life of nations and people,” the samba school explains. “Imagine what life would be without money. How could we buy and sell, receive and pay, stock up and save for the future, if it did not exist?”
The plot of the speech covers various periods of human history and important events, such as the minting of the first coins in the ancient kingdom of Lydia in the 7th century BC and the release of the first paper money in China in the 10th century. They will also describe the first market commodity relations between the indigenous people of South America, the Indians and the European discoverers, as well as the first Brazilian mint in which the coins used in the slave trade were minted.
Choreographers will draw attention to saving and investing money through bank deposits, financial instruments and other means. Imperatriz dancers will complete their bitcoin theme at the Rio Carnival. Dancers note that an increasing number of companies globally are beginning to use cryptocurrencies.
“We will end the parade, speaking of the future, already existing through cryptocurrency — a system of digital resources designed to function as a medium of exchange,” the samba school said.
Cryptocurrencies are increasingly penetrating mass culture. In January, it became known that the US will release a series about a cryptocurrency startup. In 2017, the American series “Anatomy of Passion” showed an episode in which the hospital, where the main events of the series take place, was attacked by hackers, which caused the appearance of a blue screen of death on all computers of the clinic demanding ransom in bitcoins. In the middle of 2018, cryptocurrencies also appeared in the Marvel comics and the game based on the Simpsons.
