Block.one, the creator of the EOSIO blockchain protocol, announced the second version of its software this Tuesday, aimed at improving productivity, security and creating new tools for developers.

According to Block.one, EOSIO 2.0 will be the first implementation of the protocol, where the WebAssembly engine will be used to expand the capabilities of the network.

“EOS VM, our purpose-built blockchain WASM engine, runs the EOS Mechanics WASM CPU benchmarks up to 16x faster than Binaryen, which was released with EOSIO 1.0,” the company writes.

In addition, with the launch of the update, EOS will be the first blockchain protocol to adopt WebAuthn authentication standards to increase the security and usability of applications on the platform. WebAuthn allows hardware devices to authenticate and sign transactions in a browser without additional software.

“EOSIO 2 rc1 is officially available for community to download and utilize on testnets and even non critical EOS nodes. Assuming no major issues this will be the final 2.0 version and it’s super fast!”- DanIel Larimer, Block.one technical director, wrote in a comment.

The activation of EOSIO 1.8, the first EOS network update that required a hard fork, was carried out two weeks ago.
