IOTA has partnered with automaker Jaguar Land Rover to develop a proof of concept (PoC) for energy tracking for charging cars using DLT.

IOTA announced this on a blog, noting that it has partnered with Jaguar Land Rover and French energy research center Engie Lab Crigen to develop PoC. The goal of the initiative is to show the public how to use energy to recharge Jaguar I-Pace cars in the Trondheim Powerhouse, which will become the basis for PoC testing.

Head of the vehicle-as-a-service engineer group at Jaguar Land Rover, Russell Vickers, said the proof of concept offers opportunities for the future of smart cities that care about energy. He noted:

“This agile initiative demonstrates vividly how cities can transform both infrastructure and transportation into a sustainable and mutually beneficial ecosystem. We are excited to let the public see how energy-positive buildings and vehicles such as the I-Pace in this demonstration can create positive sustainability innovation in line with Jaguar Land Rover’s Destination Zero strategy.”

According to the report, a smart wallet on the IOTA blockchain has been introduced in the Jaguar I-Pace, which can be used to recharge with the Green Charging option. This option enables I-Pace owners to charge their cars with exclusively renewable energy.

In addition, the smart wallet gives I-Pace users the opportunity to earn IOTA coins, and also allows the car to automatically report data related to road conditions, including information about potholes, weather and traffic. Then this currency can be used to pay for services, such as parking. For the first time about testing a wallet, it became known this spring.
