Police in India became aware of a multi-million dollar fraudulent scheme using Bitcoin after the organizer was killed by his accomplices, writes Times of India.

On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, five men brought the body of 35-year-old Abdul Shakoor to a private hospital, and then disappeared, but were soon detained by police on suspicion of murder.

“Crypto-currency worth hundreds of crores led to the murder of Abdul Shakoor. The accused, who are all members of Shakoor’s business team, tortured him brutally at a house in Prem Nagar (on the outskirts of Dehradun) that led to his death,” the police said.

Shakoor, allegedly, deceived not only investors by appropriating their assets worth about $68 million, but also members of his own group when he said that he had lost all Bitcoins as a result of a hacked cryptocurrency wallet. Those, however, refused to believe in the voiced version and tortured their leader to death in the hope of receiving a password from the wallet.

During one of the tortures, Shakoor lost consciousness. As hopes for gaining access to the account began to fade, the accomplices of Shakur made a desperate attempt to bring him back to life by taking him to two medical institutions.

In one hospital, doctors told them that he was dead. After that, they rushed to deliver him to a multidisciplinary hospital, where they received the same answer.

“All of them escaped, leaving their vehicle in front of the ambulance,” the police said.
