Jimmy Chang is on a hot streak. In the smoke-filled gambling parlor at Singapore’s ritzy Marina Bay Sands Casino, Chang was playing blackjack, a game not favored in the region thanks to poorer odds compared to baccarat, as well as the mentally taxing nature of the game.

To make matters worse, instead of dealing from a shoe, cards at the Marina Bay Sands Casino are dealt from an automatic card shuffling machine — a huge faux pas for anyone who delves in the dark art of counting cards.

But odds and statistics aside, Chang is having a monster night.

He’s playing flawless basic strategy, a whiskey in one hand, a cigarette in the other (Singapore still allows smoking in its casinos, one of the few places left on the island that smoking indoors is sanctioned, because you know, vice).

Chang’s hot streak is attracting a crowd and one that is only all too happy to ride on his coattails to some easy winnings, much to his chagrin.

In some casinos, the Marina Bay Sands included, bystanders can place bets alongside a player’s. So Chang is attracting some freeloaders, who are loading up on side bets, something which he can’t prevent, but irritates him…
