I build a trail through a dark forest. I lay asphalt and construct a bike path along a river. Am I obligated to give you a comfy experience like you were snuggled down in a backyard pup tent? Must you be able to put on headphones, close your eyes, and have mindful meditation totally oblivious to your surroundings? Must I give you virtual reality without ticks, mosquitos, or drifters with a few warrants?

The American Tobacco Trail is a 23+ mile rails-to-trails project located in the Triangle Region of North Carolina. The route crosses through the City of Durham; Durham, Chatham, and Wake counties.

The American Tobacco Trail is a wonderful creation. Following the route of an old railroad, it starts in leafy woods in bucolic suburbia and ends in an urban area struggling with crime. It gets a bad rap. In places, it is a little gnarly. In other places, it is quite posh.
