Providing food for the hungry has been a cornerstone of charitable giving for hundreds of years. But while food donation can cure hunger, the growing problem of malnutrition is much more complicated. One in eight people around the world are undernourished and three million children die every year from malnutrition. This phenomenon, known as “hidden hunger,” is a micronutrient deficiency caused by the lack of nutrients essential to health, development and growth. Food fortification is a highly-effective way to add these nutrients to a food supply.

This month’s nonprofit, Project Healthy Children (PHC), not only fortifies foods, but a key component of their work is establishing programs that are self-sustaining — countrywide, market-based, mandatory programs that are run by governments and industry — allowing them to celebrate the day they leave a country, not the day they arrive.

Food fortification programs are one of the most cost-effective and sustainable stand-alone interventions to impact global welfare. This was proven by a group of economists in 2008 who were asked to identify priorities that would address the 10 greatest global challenges. At the end of their deliberations, food fortification ranked in the top three.

With such a highly-effective nonprofit that is fighting to save lives every day, we are excited to see what our members’ dollar donations can do in April.
