media empowering people

Knowledge is power.” An often overused phrase, however, we can’t escape how true a phrase it really is. When it comes to our health, it is difficult to recognize a potentially dangerous disease unless we are armed with the knowledge of its symptoms and know where to go to seek treatment. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is not uncommon for a child to die before the age of five due to preventable diseases. Providing people in these parts of the world with access to information about nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, malaria prevention, HIV/AIDS, and family planning truly saves lives. Our November nonprofit creates mass media campaigns that address these types of issues and are broadcast in the areas of the world that need them most.

Development Media International (DMI) has run campaigns in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Their unique approach helps create a demand for health care services as opposed to traditional models that focus on supply. And they have vast amounts of data that show how many lives they are able to save. In November, the Altruist community raised $115 for DMI. This translates to roughly 5 additional years of healthy life for a child under the age of five (5 disability adjusted life years or DALYs).

As our community of 158 members continues to grow, our impact will only become more profound. We will continue to bring you stories of how we are making real change in the world and the impact your dollar has on the nonprofits we support.
