funding research to find charitable leaders

One of the reasons that Altruist even exists is to lower the barrier for entry into the philanthropic world. It is difficult for any one individual to truly know the effectiveness of their donation. When we select our featured nonprofits, we rely heavily on the recommendations of our September charity, GiveWell. An organization dedicated to finding outstanding charitable opportunities and publishing the full details and analysis to help donors decide where to send their dollars.

GiveWell conducts research that consists of conversations with nonprofit representatives and funders, a review of their documentation, at least one site visit and in-depth impact analysis, among other things. They then make publicly available as much information as possible, such as conversation notes, photos from site visits, original documents and details of their analysis. Because they do not take a cut of any donations made to their listed charities or receive any fees from top charities for being featured, all of this is is made possible with donations sent directly to GiveWell.

This is the type of research that our September donation of $128 will help support. As our community of 156 members continues to grow, our impact will only become more profound. We will continue to bring you stories of how we are making real change in the world and the impact your dollar has on the nonprofits we support.
