restoring sight, restoring life

Preventable blindness has become an epidemic in some parts of the world. An eye injury or the development of cataracts — things that for most of us can easily be cured — go untreated in poorer communities. Blindness can affect someone at any age, and can cause feelings of isolation and hopelessness.

In October, in honor of World Sight Day, our $130 donation went to The Seva Foundation, a nonprofit working to restore sight around the world. Our donation will pay for a patient’s outreach screening, eye surgery, overnight stay at a clinic and follow up visits. At one of Seva’s partner hospitals in Guatemala, Wendi received these same services with a similar donation.

Diagnosed through an outreach clinic with a traumatic cataract, Wendi was blind for five years following an injury to her eye. Four months following surgery, Wendi is doing great. She now wears glasses and her eye, which had no vision before, sees 20/40!

Wendi enjoys reading, going to school and playing with her friends and her dog Yanqui.

Only a year ago, it would have been hard to believe that our community was capable of having such an immense impact on someone in need. As our community of 133 members continues to grow, our impact will only become more profound. We will continue to bring you stories of how we are making real change in the world and the impact your dollar has on the nonprofits we support.
