motivation done right

Most modern companies have relied on carrots and sticks to drive growth, but the best businesses of the future will rely on very different instruments. Creating a sense of purpose for your employees will be one of the most important of these tools. Today, finding deep purpose in your work is mostly seen as a luxury, but if you look at what young workers are demanding, it becomes clear that a strong sense purpose will be a necessity in the not-so-distant future.

There are two types of motivation in the workplace, internal and external. Dan Pink, in his book Drive, discusses how internally motivated people doing creative work outperform their externally motivated peers. Couple that with the fact that automation continues to eliminate our non-creative jobs, and it becomes clear that the internally motivated workforce will have the unfair advantage in our future economy. There are many things you need to do right to create this type of motivation, but purpose is often the hardest to capture without support from a corporate culture.

Now, this doesn’t mean that every business needs to reclassify as a nonprofit, but it does mean that to stay competitive in our future economy, we need to start thinking about more than carrots and sticks. The bad news is that it’s going to take a lot more effort. The good news is that it’s going to create a better world.
