how to become an amazon seller

Although opening an Amazon account may seem easy, there are few important decisions you must make. These decisions can have a direct impact on your bottom line so it is crucial to make the right ones.

Let’s take a look at what it takes to become an Amazon seller, and the decisions you will need to make.

A Guide To Amazon Seller Accounts

First, create an account. There are two options available to you right away.

Either create an individual seller’s account or a professional seller’s account.

Account for individual seller

You can create it for free, but you will need to pay a $0.99 commission for each unit you sell. These fees are in addition to the variable closing fees and referral fees that Amazon charges for every sale. This plan is basic and you won’t have access to many important features such as:

  • Inventory reports
  • Amazon restricted categories
  • Amazon advertising
  • Promotions
  • You can create listings in bulk
  • Edit existing pages and create new product pages
  • Shipping rates flexible

You will lose out on certain features, as you may have noticed. It is completely free, which is the main selling point for an individual. If you move a lot of units, however, the $0.99 commission can quickly add to your costs. You also have to be able to sell low-priced products.

Account for professional sellers

The recurring monthly fee for a professional account is $39.99. The $0.99 commission will not be charged to your professional account. You will still need to pay variable closing fees and referral fees for each sale.

Simple math will show you that if your products sell more than 40 in a given month, a professional account is cheaper than an individual account. Access to Amazon advertising solutions and inventory reports are also available. To be eligible for the Amazon Buy Box, you will need to have a professional account.

Switching between accounts is possible at any time. This is why most sellers begin with an individual account. This is a great way to get started and test the waters and determine if your product or business plan is viable. After-sales start to pick up, you can move to a professional account. Remember that the professional account subscription fee of $39.99 is non-refundable.

How Do I Create An Account?

It is easy to register yourself as a seller. Keep the following information and documents in mind before you start:

  • Amazon will not reveal your identity. When they purchase your product, customers will only see your business name.
  • Issued by the government, ID
  • Contact information: Make sure to have an email ID and a phone number handy. This will serve as the point of contact between Amazon and customers. During registration, Amazon will verify your contact information.
