Ethereum to Process 100,000 Transactions per Second, Says Co-Founder Vitalik
On July 21, Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin talked about the long-term future of the network with participants of the annual Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Paris.
Thursday seemed to be the busiest day at the Ethereum Community Conference, with many attendees impatiently awaiting Buterin’s talk.
At the developer-focused conference, Buterin talked about the upcoming “Merge,” in which Ethereum will make a complete transition from Proof-of-Work (PoW) to Proof-of-Stake (PoS).
He also said that the network’s roadmap includes the “Surge”, which will increase scalability for rollups via sharding.
“At the end of this road map, Ethereum will be a much more scalable system,” said Buterin. “By the end, Ethereum will be able to process 100,000 transactions per second.”
He added that in terms of overall Ethereum network development, the protocol will be “55 percent complete once we complete The Merge.” So there is more work for developers ahead.
After The Merge, Ethereum will then undergo further upgrades which he calls the “surge,” “verge,” “purge,” and “splurge”.
The Surge refers to the addition of sharding, a scaling solution that the Ethereum Foundation claims will allow Layer 2 protocols to operate more efficiently.
The Verge will allow users to become validators without having to store large amounts of data on their machines. In a proof-of-stake network, validators lock or stack ETH to confirm and verify transactions. In Buterin’s view, The Verge is “great for decentralization.”
“The Purge tries to cut down on the amount of space you have to have on your hard drive, tries to simplify the Ethereum protocol over time, and doesn’t require nodes to store history,” Buterin said.
The Splurge involves a bunch of other minor upgrades to make sure the network runs more smoothly than in the previous 4 stages.
Ether (ETH) is currently trading at $1,604 at press time, up more than 35% from last month.
