City under lockdown? The team has been asked to work from home? Have a crucial project to deliver? We feel you! As a Team Lead, the current situation that you are in can be quite baffling. Here are a few do’s and dont’s that you have to take care while managing a remote team, especially a team that is grappling with its own challenges.

Set Clear Goals

Your team will achieve a lot more with SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based. Make sure you as a Team Lead have done your homework before setting out to allot homework to them.

Stop bugging them with frequent calls

Yes, you are paying them but your teammate can absolutely do without those frequent phone calls on status updates. Considering the overload on our telecom networks now, you can do the nation a lot of good by keeping your fingers away from your keypad.

Stop sending them reminder emails every 15 mins

Oh, so you are being nice and not calling them but are sending them reminder emails instead! Well, that’s equally annoying too. Give them a breathing space and trust your teammate. He/She will get back on their own when they have a real update.

Stop expecting them to be at your service 24/7

There might be a toddler at home crying for attention or they may just be trying their hand at baking, you have no clue what they are up to. Expecting them to be available 24/7 is unfair. It is a job best left to bots.

Put in place some reliable tools

Remember all those good stories you read about technology helping humans do their jobs better? Well, it is actually time to put some of that technology into use. With the right tools, performance management for a remote team can be a breeze.

If you are a Slack user, we have some good news for you. Presenting you Amby — an OKR-based performance management tool that lets you and your team set the right goals and follow through them without you nagging them for regular updates.

Remember, these are testing times both for you and your teammates. And you can win this by working together.

Till then #StaySafe and #WorkfromHome.
