El Salvador? Taiwan will survive

Wasting money on corrupt regimes never bought love anyway

--

This week, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that Taiwan is terminating official diplomatic relations with El Salvador, after learning that the former Central American ally will be establishing diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The severance of ties came about when Taiwan refused to finance the Port Of La Union development project. According to Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, El Salvador repeatedly asked the Taiwanese government to invest in the developmental project. After a Taiwanese team was dispatched to El Salvador to inspect the site, the Taiwanese government felt the project wasn’t viable, and would result in serious debt for both countries.

After the inauguration of President Tsai Ing-Wen of the Democratic Progressive Party, the authoritarian, hyper-nationalistic Chinese Communist Party (CPP) stepped up their extensive political, military, economic, and diplomatic oppression against Taiwan. Ostensibly, the CCP is angry at the 23 million Taiwanese citizens for expressing their political will, in their hard won democracy, by electing the Democratic Progressive Party to lead Taiwan. China has been on a spending spree to lure Taiwan’s remaining seventeen diplomatic allies, particularly in the Caribbean and Central America where the majority of Taiwan’s allies are located.

The CCP promises huge investment and economic relief packages to lure Taiwan’s remaining allies to switch allegiances. However, these nations hypnotized by billions of dollars don’t realize that China doesn’t exactly keep its promises to new diplomatic allies. Costa Rica previously broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 2007, China failed to live up to its pledges of providing $1 billion dollars to build a refinery and an additional $400 million to help construct a highway for Costa Rica

If the CCP wants to become the “sugar daddy” of the global community by lavishly wasting billions of Chinese taxpayer money at improvised, corrupt, high crime Third-World nations, then let them do so. The Taiwanese government shouldn’t have to waste taxpayer money to appease small diplomatic allies, who would eventually backstab the Taiwanese for economic gains from China. J. Michael Cole states:

The loss of mostly small and oftentimes parasitical official diplomatic allies is entirely survivable and does not have a significant impact on Taiwan’s ability to function as a sovereign state.

Even if China snatched up Taiwan’s remaining seventeen allies, the Taiwanese will survive. As long as the United States continues to uphold the Taiwan Relations Act, then losing allies such as El Salvador won’t be a major loss. The Taiwanese people are survivors, pragmatists, and have experience dealing with major diplomatic setbacks since being evicted out of the UN in the early 1970s. The Taiwanese people definitely won’t be losing sleep over losing El Salvador.
