Stonewall Jackson’s Place of Death

It was here in 1863 that the Confederacy lost its greatest Lieutenant General, and in the opinion of many sound historians, its best hope for independence. Already weakened from friendly fire at Chancellorsville, coupled with the amputation of his right arm, it was pneumonia that finally did in Lee’s greatest weapon.

His last words were,

“Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.”

Following their stunning victory at Chancellorsville, Lee decides to take the Army of Northern Virginia on an invasion of the North. On July 1, 1863, less than two months after Jackson’s death, the two armies meet at a small Pennsylvania town called Gettysburg…
