The corporate leader will share her expertise in business and digital technology through her commitment to local news and nonprofit leadership
WASHINGTON — Aug. 16, 2022 — The American Journalism Project today announced the appointment of Hilary Schneider, chief executive officer of Shutterfly, to its board of directors. In her new role, Schneider will share her expertise in business leadership, digital media, and building sustainable business models with the venture philanthropy.
Schneider has more than 20 years of experience in consumer technology, and is an expert in building robust systems to drive sustainable growth and foster strong collaboration in organizations. A former business leader at newspaper and internet publisher Knight Ridder, Schneider’s personal passion for local news combined with her experience as a leader in technology will bring expertise to the American Journalism Project’s work to rebuild local news for the digital age.
“Local news is a cornerstone of our democracy, and thriving local news is vital to the health of our communities,” Schneider said. “I look forward to joining the American Journalism Project board to continue elevating and amplifying the invaluable work this vital organization does for communities around the country.”
Schneider joined Shutterfly as CEO in 2020. Prior to joining Shutterfly, Schneider served as CEO of Wag!, a national, on-demand mobile dog walking and dog care service. In addition to her work with Knight Ridder, she was also president and CEO of LifeLock, and has held leadership roles at Yahoo!.
“I have admired Hilary since our days at Knight Ridder, where she was a uniquely strategic executive,” said Joe Natoli, American Journalism Project board chair and former publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. “She will bring an important, unique perspective to the work of the American Journalism Project as we help grantees build sustainable business models for providing local news and information.”
Schneider is board chair of water.org, where she has served as a board member since 2011. She has also served on the Vail Resorts board since 2010. She has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
“As our organization grows, it’s critical that our board and leadership represent expertise from a variety of backgrounds,” said Sarabeth Berman, CEO of the American Journalism Project. “We’re thrilled to have Hilary on board, and know her deep experience in business, journalism and technology will elevate our work to serve communities across the country.”
