“The sit on which Ft. Admas stands has been of strategic importance in defending Newport Harbor since colonial days. From 1716 through 1779 it served as the campsite for British troops occupying the city of Newport and the staging area for the British advance in the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778" (Newport plaque).
