American Bridge 21st Century Weekly Recap: August 4, 2023

Our top moments of the week

--

This week, the GOP’s top presidential candidate was indicted for a third time. From the top of the ticket down to attorney general races, Republicans are not sending their best people.

Here are our biggest moments of the week:

1. This F*cking Guy: Trump’s Indicted (3x)

On Tuesday evening, Donald Trump was indicted on federal charges… again.

This time, he was indicted on charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election — because he was overwhelmingly rejected by the American people. This is not to be confused with his other two previous indictments. Or others to come.

In response, American Bridge spokesperson Monica Venzke released the following statement:

“Well, we certainly didn’t plan on having three Trump indictments on our 2023 bingo card! It’s a good reminder that trying to overturn our democracy and illegally install yourself as president has consequences.”

2. Ron DeSantis Calls for ‘Slitting Throats’ in Government

Federal employee unions and nonpartisan public service organizations are speaking out against 2024 hopeful Ron DeSantis’ calls to “start slitting throats.” A new report from the Washington Post details DeSantis’ violent rhetoric:

“‘On bureaucracy, you know, we’re going to have all these deep state people, you know, we’re going to start slitting throats on Day One and be ready to go,’ DeSantis said at a barbecue in Rye, N.H., on Sunday hosted by former senator Scott Brown (R-Mass.). ‘You’re going to see a huge, huge outcry because Washington wants to protect its own.’”

DeSantis has said he’d try to eliminate the Internal Revenue Service and the Departments of Education, Commerce, and Energy. The Florida governor also wants to “reduce” the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigations.

3. Lynn Fitch: the “Woman Who Ended Roe”

Lynn Fitch, the attorney general behind the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade is up for reelection and facing a challenge from Democrat Greta Kemp Martin. A new report from The 19th covers the race for Mississippi’s top cop.

“Fitch, Mississippi’s first woman attorney general and the first Republican to hold the office since 1878, achieved a 50-year goal of conservatives and anti-abortion advocates with the Dobbs decision, which she said would empower women.”

Martin is also hitting Fitch for her lack of aggressive action to prosecute officials behind a welfare fraud scandal backed by “well-connected political allies and donors, including former NFL quarterback Brett Favre.”

4. This F*cking Guy: 219 Scaramuccis Later

This week, in 2017, Donald Trump’s White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci was fired after only 10 days on the job. He was one of Trump’s seven communications directors and only a small piece of the Trump administration’s 92% high-level staff turnover.

The aides that lasted, however, weren’t free from scandal either. Many of Trump’s most-trusted allies have been arrested.

In response to the anniversary of Scaramucci’s infamous firing, American Bridge spokesperson Monica Venzke released the following statement:

“It’s been 219 Scaramuccis since his firing, and that was only the beginning of the daily turbulence of Donald Trump’s presidency. From firings to indictments, Trump’s most trusted allies have always been people just like him — incompetent and criminal. This f*cking guy’s entire presidency was riddled with disaster, and another term of a Trump presidency would be even worse.”
