Introducing SPACE: The Five Core Elements of Changing Mobility
Happy Thursday, everyone!
We’d like to present you the latest paper by AMO CEO SangGyoo Sim on the evolving landscape of the auto industry.
Titled SPACE: The Five Core Elements of Changing Mobility, the paper explores the future of mobility through five keywords: Electrification, Connectivity, Autonomous Driving, Platform, and Security. As the title suggests, these five concepts are the core elements of changing mobility, and when abbreviated, they become SPACE.
“Recent advancements have truly made us push the boundaries of a car in a way that makes flying cars or submarine cars no longer seem a thing of distant fantasy.”
How exactly is mobility changing? To start, we are entering the era of the fourth industrial revolution, with IoT and Cloud leading the integration of information technology in our society across multiple industries. At the center of this change lies the automobile, which has over the past decades become an indispensable part of our daily lives. Now, the car is taking on a new role as not only a mode of transportation but also a space for service and entertainment consumption, which is enabled by the forces of SPACE.
Electrification
Electric cars are quickly becoming more common in the car market, and there is a reason for it: electric cars are more light and compact compared to traditional cars with internal combustion engines. New business opportunities lie in charging-related services, as an electric car’s charging cables are capable of transmitting data. Charging time can be used for analyzing diagnostics or updating the car’s software, or perhaps enjoying more entertaining services. What should not be ignored, however, is the importance of establishing proper security for all communications linked with electric cars.
Connectivity
What sets IoT devices apart from conventional gadgets is their extent of connectivity. Connected cars deliver a significantly higher degree of connectivity in comparison to traditional vehicular networks and cars, and utilize communication models like V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle), V2I (Vehicle-to-Infra), and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) for smooth engagement with its surroundings. While connectivity is important in making the car more powerful and secure, connectivity also makes the car more vulnerable due to more exposed communication channels — hence why security must always be a priority.
Autonomous Driving
Autonomous cars use a range of sensors, including cameras, radars, LiDAR and infrared sensors, to grasp the world around them and make immediate decisions on how to drive. While self-driving technology is still a work in progress, mainly due to the challenges in adjusting to rapidly changing traffic conditions, that has not stopped some manufacturers from releasing cars equipped with various degrees of autonomous technology. Some of these trials have resulted in fatal accidents, but overall, positive progress has been constant.
Platform
With cars becoming increasingly connected, many companies are now eyeing business expansion via services designed specifically for connected cars. Just like the smartphone market shifted with the arrival of Apple’s service and platform-based iPhone, many are expecting a similar transformation to hit the automobile market. Services and service platforms designed to connect with smart cars will become the main focus for business.
Security
Without security in place, connected vehicles can be exposed to potentially serious external threats. It’s crucial to always start with security in order to maintain stable and secure internal vehicle networks, and prevent injection of malware or attempts at other malicious attacks on the car. The only way to secure communication is to foster cooperation among automobile manufacturers, car equipment providers, and security solution providers for a safer connected car future.
“Conventional cars will become smart cars, and they are the next generation of smart devices to enter our lives.”
AMO will be joining this revolution by driving value for car data, an important enabler of a more connected and convenient, and most importantly, a secure future.
