Tableau is a data visualization software/tool. Most of the organization using the Tableau for Business Intelligence. Tableau easies the data visualization developer’s work. So the developers love to work with Tableau. Tableau offers online dashboards too. So you can easily create your dashboard locally and you can publish it online in an easy manner. Tableau offers both online(own hosting, Other cloud hosting) and on-premise software for Interactive dashboards.
On-Premise Server Requirement:
Tableau online server resides on the cloud(some other location in the world). All organizations are worried about sharing their data on the internet(Cloud Hosting). Everyone wants to keep the data on their premise. They don’t want to take risks by sharing the data. So Tableau offers on-premise license based software.
In this tutorial, you will learn, how to setup Tableau Server locally on your Windows Computer.
Minimum Hardware Requirements:
To install Tableau Server, you must have the following hardware requirements.
- 8 physical cores or 16V-CPU (ex. AWS, Azure)
- Minimum 16GB (32 GB system memory recommended).
- 50 GB minimum free disk space.
- 64 bit Windows OS(7,8,10, Server 2012)
If you don’t have the above-mentioned configuration, then Tableau Server won’t install it on your PC.
Let’s begin the Tableau Server installation in an easy way.
Step1. Download Tableau Server
Download Tableau Server using the below link.
I am picking the latest the Tableau Server version 2020.3. The link is given below.
This is the latest version while writing this article.
Step2. Start the Installation
To install Tableau Server, you need a Windows admin account. This is mandatory.
Right-click the downloaded Tableau Server file and click Run as administrator. Click next next to install.
In the below image, Choose the Create New Tableau Server Installation
Note: If you are prompted by Windows Defender Firewall, click Allow access. You may need to do this multiple times for the installation to complete.
Step3: Login To TSM
After the basic installation completes, click Finish. Setup will then open the TSM(Tableau Service Manager) configuration web page on the computer default browser where you are installing Tableau Server.
The below screen will come up. We need to log in using the same windows admin username and password(any admin account username and password of same computer), which we have used while installing the Tableau Server.
Step4: Activate and Register Tableau Server
Once you signed-in, You will enter into the Activate page. On the Activate page, Enter or paste your product key and click Activate License. Or click Start Tableau Server Trial if you don’t have the product key or you want to explore Tableau
Step5: Register Your Information
On the Register page, enter your information into the corresponding fields and click Register button.
Step6: Configure Initial Node Settings
After registering, you can see the below image. In the below image, select Local in the Identity Store, if you want to use local admin username and password for authentication or choose Active Directory if you active directory. Leave other settings and click Initialize. If you are first time user, then try Local in the Identity store
The initialization process can take a while. When initialization is complete, the following page is displayed:
Click the Continue and it will begin the Tableau Server Installation. It will take some time.
Click the Continue button once the installation is done.
Step6: Add an Administrator Account
Once everything completed, it will open page in the browser like below.
It will ask you to create new Admin Account for Tableau Creator. So Please enter new username and password of your choice. Don’t forget this username and password. Once entered all the information, click the New Administrator Account button. You will see the home of Tableau Server like below.
That’s all. Your Tableau Server Installation is done. Now you can create many users based on your license you have. Hope it will help when you are trying to install the Tableau Server on first time.
