Chatbots have taken businesses by storm and based on its rapid growth in consumer interest and engagement, it’s likely that chatbots are a technology trend that publishers will soon embrace.

Last year in the month of December, Zee Media launched chatbot for its brands, Zee News Hindi, Zee News English, WION & DNA in a partnership with Amplify.ai, Silicon Valley based venture. The aim was to create a holistic engagement model for its customers through interaction, analysis and customized content solutions.

Since then Zee Media has also launched chatbot for Zee Taas, Zee 24 Ghanta to provide personalized news to its users in regional languages of Marathi & Bengali and Zee Business for business updates to profit & wealth. Zee Media has enabled users to get the latest news stories that are relevant to them at their time of convenience. Its chatbot has evolved over time to provide personalized and discrete options to its users. The chatbot has the ability to generate breaking news alerts based on the reader’s geographical location and preferences.

Zee Media has maintained a fantastic track record by being at the forefront of the new age of content and news consumption in India. On 12th May 2018, Zee Media Chatbot sent over 10 Million messages to its users to showcase news about the polls of Karnataka election. More than 85% of the users opened and consumed the news delivered via the Facebook Messenger chatbot. The news was broadcasted in real time at a tiny fraction of the cost of other messaging solutions like SMS. This straightforward approach has driven results for Zee Media, which boasts more than 2.6 Million chatbot subscribers across its properties that use the service five to six times a week.

The average Zee user is 75% more likely to return to the messenger app every day if he/she uses the messenger as a destination for news consumption versus someone who does not. These results were beyond expected, clearly showing that users wanted to consume more news if it is personalized.

Publisher chatbots powered by Amplify.ai use machine learning via implicit and explicit input and behavior of users — the stories they read, the amount of time spent with each story, and the other cues such as likes and shares. Based on user preferences and past behaviors, the bot can recommend stories
that are likely to be of interest to readers before they begin looking for that content. Just as the bot can predict potential future interests, it can also de-prioritize or eliminate certain topics based on lack of interest. Chatbots allow readers to stay in the know and keep up with latest stories within their topics of interest, enabling greater control over the information they consume.

Since its inception in 2016, Amplify.ai has been a positive disruptive force for brand and consumer conversations across news publishing, entertainment, hospitality, travel, food, public service and more. With clients across the globe including United States, Europe and Asia, some of the Indian brands in the Amplify.ai stable include Kohler, Wittyfeed, Neemrana Hotels, Change.org, The Akshaya Patra Foundation, and others while international brands include the likes of Tony Robbins, Flawless by Gabriel Union & Quandoo among others.
