Why I Do Not Observe Ramadan

Growing up, I was required to fast during Ramadan every year. It was always a nuisance, and it frankly wreaked havoc on my blood sugar. When I began to get my period, there was one great benefit to an otherwise painful monthly occurrence.

Girls and women are not required to fast during their period, though according to the rules of the religion, we are required to make up those days later on.
