I have tried many applications for writing over the years. Although I have pretty much settled on what I’m going to use I still find it interesting to check out new offerings from time to time. Whether you’re simply curious, and maybe willing to try out something different, or you’ve yet to find the one app that is best suited to your writing needs, here is a list of a dozen such applications to try out in 2024. While some of these applications are cross-platform, they are all available on Linux.

Focuswriter

I have recommended this one many times. It seems like I just can’t recommend it enough, though; It’s an app that doesn’t get enough attention. It is super-simple and straightforward to use, and it’s available on Windows and Linux.

Focuswriter runs in full-screen mode by default in an effort to drive away possible distractions. It has a few basic bells and whistles like word count goals and typewriter sounds. Perhaps more importantly it implements a jump list system to help you navigate large documents; this can be indispensable when working on something like a novel, where you may need some particularly agile maneuvers across broad portions of text. The theming is customizable so that you can configure a comfortable work environment for yourself. This cozy aspect really sells the software for me so if you haven’t tried FocusWriter maybe 2024 is the year that you will find your new favorite software.
