In this article, I’d like to recap my presentation at the Arewa Youth Mentorship webinar on Exploring Opportunities at the World’s Top Multinational Organizations, including organisations like the UN, World Bank, AFDB, Microsoft, and more. During the session, I shared my expertise and insights based on my experience. This information will be valuable for those interested in working for multinational corporations (MNCs) like Microsoft, Google, or Amazon. In it, you’ll learn about the different career paths available, the importance of subscribing to job alerts, the power of LinkedIn networking, and more. Plus, you’ll get tips for passing the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) screening and familiarising yourself with job interviews. By the end of this article, you’ll be better equipped to embark on your job search journey and land your dream job at a multinational corporation.

1. First Thing First

Are you interested in securing a role at a multinational corporation like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, or Meta? If so, it’s essential to understand that not all roles require technical skills like coding. Opportunities are available for those with sales, marketing, business administration, and law backgrounds among others. It’s worth exploring whether these companies have positions that suit someone with a non-technical skill set.

It’s also important to note that most MNCs have two pathways for entry — students and recent graduates, on the one hand, and professionals looking to switch careers, on the other hand. If unsure, visit the company’s website and check out its careers tab to learn more. Don’t limit yourself to technical roles; consider the many possibilities these companies offer.

2. Staying Ahead of the Game

In addition to being aware that not all roles in MNCs require coding skills and familiarising yourself with different career paths, it’s crucial to highlight the importance of subscribing to job alerts from the MNCs’ websites. For instance, if you want to work for Microsoft or Google, visit their websites and sign up for career alerts.

LinkedIn is another valuable resource for receiving job notifications. You can follow the industry page related to your field of interest or connect with technical recruiters from the company you’re interested in. Doing so will keep you in the loop whenever a new job opening becomes available.

In other words, being proactive in your job search and utilising available resources is crucial. Subscribe to job alerts, follow industry pages, and connect with recruiters to stay informed about the latest job opportunities in your field of interest.

3. Referrals

Recognising how people can be recruited into a company, the referral is often the quickest path to securing employment. A referral is a talent-finding strategy utilised by many multinational corporations, where a current employee refers a potential candidate to the company’s technical recruiters for evaluation. According to Zipia, referrals are four times more likely to be offered a job than applicants who apply through a website. Employee referrals make up 30–40% of all hires, and 45% of referral hires stay longer than four years, compared to just 25% of job board hires.

With this in mind, it’s advisable for job seekers to network with colleagues who work at the MNC they’re interested in. Remember that a referral doesn’t guarantee a job offer, but it can help speed up the process by getting recruiters to look closely at your CV and potentially set up your first interview.

4. Resume’

As a seasoned resume reviewer, I’ve encountered hundreds of resumes over the years. I’ve noticed that only a tiny percentage can pass the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) screening. Many of us make mistakes in crafting our CVs and resumes.

Recently, I held four “Resume Clinics” workshops, where I had the opportunity to analyse resumes submitted as part of the criteria for acceptance into the workshop. I discovered common issues, including personal information like age, sex, location, marital status, or grouping schools attended and certificates obtained in separate blocks.

The good news is that these mistakes can be easily corrected. One solution is using ChatGPT and FlowCV to create an attention-grabbing, award-winning resume. For example, go to https://chat.openai.com/chat and input the prompt “generate an attention-grabbing and award-winning resume for Mr N, a Science Education graduate from ATBU Bauchi with 5 years of experience in teaching, supervision, and mentoring at one of the prestigious Higher Schools in Turkey.” Then, visit https://flowcv.com/ and sign up to customise the generated resume based on the job description and skills requirements.

After fine-tuning your resume, take the next step and share it with trusted mentors from Arewa Youth Mentors via their Telegram channel or connect with knowledgeable technical recruiters who can offer feedback and suggestions for improvement. This will raise your visibility and greatly enhance your chances of getting selected for an interview.

5. Power of Networking using LinkedIn

As a job seeker, it’s crucial not to overlook the power and benefits of using LinkedIn. This platform can significantly benefit you in your job search journey. It provides you with visibility to recruiters and allows you to expand your professional network, which, as they say, is your net worth. LinkedIn also offers job search tools and lets you connect with technical recruiters. To make the most of LinkedIn, create a professional and attention-grabbing profile with the help of tools like ChatGPT. Get endorsements from your colleagues and former managers, and consider obtaining certifications to enhance your profile further and make yourself more noticeable to recruiters.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool that job seekers should take advantage of. A professional-looking profile, positive attitude, and meaningful connections can help you reach new heights in job opportunities. By carefully selecting who you follow and deliberately building your network, the sky truly is the limit on LinkedIn. So why not start crafting a winning LinkedIn profile today and take control of your career path?

6. Interviews

As a job seeker, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the different types of interviews you may encounter during your job search, especially if you’re applying to a large corporation. For instance, after your resume passes an initial screening, you may be asked to participate in a phone or video interview to discuss your qualifications further. Some recruiters may even start by asking about your salary expectations to assess your demeanour. However, this initial interview could be the last if the recruiter feels you’re not a good fit for the company.

Another critical aspect of the interview process is being prepared to answer behavioural questions. Behavioural questions aim to understand how you would react in certain situations and often begin with a prompt such as, “Tell us about a time when you performed well as part of a team despite budget constraints.” Recruiters typically look for candidates who can use the Situation, Task, Action, and Result called STAR approach to answer these questions: To enhance your interview skills, you can also check out job search websites like Indeed to learn how to answer common interview questions like “Tell us about yourself,” “What are your weaknesses?” and “Why should we hire you?” as well as “Do you have any questions for us?”

Learning from the experiences of others, particularly current employees, is a great way to become a better fit for a job.

7. Expectation Management

As a job seeker, you must understand that not every interview will result in a job offer. Managing your expectations is vital. Rejection is a normal part of the job search process, so it’s crucial to embrace it as such.

In conclusion

Securing a job at a multinational corporation requires a proactive job search, effective networking, an outstanding resume, and preparation for various types of interviews. The tips in this article can increase your chances of securing your dream job at one of the world’s top multinational organisations. Keep pushing and striving towards your career goals!
