All It Takes to Be an Expert Is to Fail

Do It Badly First, then repeat it until you don’t.

I love good work.

Love it to death when someone does awesome stuff. I try to get that 'awesome' factor infused in my work.

Anyone with a brain would be more inclined to listen to an expert. Duh.

But being the expert takes time. It takes hard choices. Takes guts and potentially embarrassing situations.

To be an expert in anything, you must do it badly first.

99% Don’t Start

At least you started. If you failed, so what? You found one more way how to not do it.

Failure is an acceptance of your current skill level, not game over.

You are in the 1% if you start. You are one of the rare group of people who puts in the work without expecting a solid result. People trust the process and themselves.

Eventually, it pays off.

It Humbles You

In many ways, we can critic others work and it gives us a power-feeling, “yes! I said it.”

Yet, the creation of something takes time, mind, and an artist who never gave into the mass opinion.

Even from Artist’s perspective, one can never be satisfied. Failure humbles their need for validation.

Artists are the ones at the helm of their craft but they have the humility to accept that they can get better or they don’t know something.

Your Expectations Are Realistic… Now

Artists get all excited before a new project. We all do. I know I get excited because it gives me a sense of how it will turn out.

The excitement is valid. The failure to achieve as you expected to is also valid. You know why? Because we’re humans. We are bound to make mistakes.

It’s only when we fail, do we have a chance to re-assess our situation and try to improve.

The expectations change. They are much more realistic now.

Turn Failure into Opportunity

We can learn to avoid the same mistakes. Experts make mistakes, too. Yet they are experts only because they had the guts to fail badly first.

The point of trying is to hope for success. However, we always know that failure is still a possibility.

To fail is to be human. To try when the rest don’t and keep at it is what helps us;

  • Be humble.
  • Start when 99% don’t.
  • Have realistic expectations.
  • And eventually, be an expert.
