Do You Know the 5 Levels of Listening
Level 5 — Listening for Their Point of View
Do you ever get the feeling that the person across from you is not listening? About 55% of communication is non-verbal. So if you get the feeling that somebody is not listening, you are probably are not wrong.
This goes both ways. To become a better listener, you need to know the five levels of listening.
First Level — Listening for the gist
This is the lowest listening level. Basically, you are intermittently listening to someone while doing something else. The most obvious sign of this behavior is looking at your mobile phone when the other person is talking. Sound familiar?
Another sign is thinking about your worldview and having an internal conversation with yourself as to how to reply to what is being said.
Second Level — Listening in preparation for a rebuttal
At this level, you are not actively listening. You are listening just enough to prepare for your rebuttal to what is being said.
You are doing two things at this level.
- You are listening long enough to the other person for a trigger. A phrase that you are going to rebut.
